Gurugram Traffic: Ahead of Dwarka Expressway Opening, 14 Km Road Leading to It Set to be Widened

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority is planning to upgrade a stretch of nearly 14 kilometres from Iffco Chowk to the Dwarka expressway by widening it.

Ahead of the expected opening of the Haryana section of Dwarka Expressway in March, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is planning to upgrade a stretch of nearly 14 kilometres from Iffco Chowk to the expressway by widening it. This road passes through Basai Road.

A consultant appointed by GMDA has carried out a traffic study to implement the plan and is likely to submit it to the authority soon. As of now, this road sees heavy traffic jams on the road between Iffco Chowk and Sukhrali, where the civic body is planning to widen the road and remove encroachments.

Amit Godara, executive engineer, GMDA said that MG Road is one of the oldest roads in the city and at one point of time it was used to travel from Delhi to Gurugram and upto Jhajjar. “This 14 kilometres stretch is in the heart of Old Gurugram and it has been decided to upgrade it and improve its connectivity to Dwarka expressway so that people can travel seamlessly to reach the Dwarka expressway,” he said.

After the opening of the 19 km stretch, the remaining portion of the Dwarka expressway in Delhi (9.5 km) is estimated to be completed by June-end, as per a report. However, commuters will be able to fully benefit from country’s first elevated urban expressway when the entire 28.5 km is opened for traffic.

Once the entire stretch is ready, 40-50 per cent traffic is likely to be shifted to this new road from the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, which is infamous for traffic jams during morning and evening peak hours.
